MarKaveus
Barnes
MarKaveus Barnes is a first-generation graduate from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Crime and Justice Studies with a focus in Urban Studies. During his time at UMass Dartmouth, he discovered his passions to serve underrepresented youth. He began to build his experience as a tutor at Carlos Pacheco Elementary and Normandin Middle School in New Bedford, MA, where he assisted students in class and after school. MarKaveus spent his summers as a tutor/mentor and Residential Supervisor with Upward Bound, which fosters the educational growth of low-income high-school students preparing for college. During his senior year, he served as the student leader for Big Brother Big Sister, where he facilitated relationships between Bigs and Littles through personal connections, programming events, and outings designed around team-building. Following graduation, MarKaveus began his career in youth development as a student success coach in Dallas, Texas, working with elementary-aged students with after-school tutoring sessions, one-on-one tutoring, sitting with students in class, and whatever else it took to help his students continue to move past their academic obstacles. As a youth behavioral counselor in Atlanta, Georgia, he supervised and taught youth necessary coping skills and positive life skills that would be valuable in their adulthood as well as fostering great relationships with their families.
MarKaveus incorporates his creativity and the arts into his work through many projects and programs. MarKaveus interned with the Program Director at New Bedford Boys and Girls Club, where he was asked to come up with a project to include all ages of the club and, in the span of six weeks, painted a mural of a world map on a wall inside the building alongside dozens of youth from 5-14 years old. With Upward Bound, he organized poetry workshops and taught a team of youth a stepping routine for their end of summer talent show.
MarKaveus enjoys the challenge of developing students academically, but also understands the importance of helping them to thrive socially in a rapidly changing world. MarKaveus strives to defeat oppression, social injustices and any other obstacles that stand in the way of our youth reaching their highest potential. MarKaveus’s main goal and purpose is to be the best possible advocate for students while creating a nurturing support system that fosters growth and relationships in collaboration with school faculty and the Scituate community.
